PENAS BLANCAS, Spain: Richard Carapaz of Ineos Grenadiers won stage 12 of the Vuelta a Espana on Thursday after attacking from a small group of riders on a long-range escape.
Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) went the wrong way in an embarrassing moment on the Stage 10 individual time trial at La Vuelta. Almeida was charging towards the finish in Alicante when he suddenly dived down an escape road to his left reserved for the team vehicles. Ad “He’s gone the wrong way!” cried Carlton Kirby on Eurosport commentary.
Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) has a big opportunity to extend his lead in this year’s La Vuelta on Tuesday as a time trial awaits the riders following their rest day. After taking more time out of his rivals on Sunday’s summit finish Les Praeres, Evenepoel is favourite to go on and win his first Grand Tour. Ad The flat parcour for Stage 10’s time trial will suit the Belgian, who is 1’12” ahead of Enric Mas (Movistar) and 1’53” in front of Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma).
It’s been a while since Spain had three riders in the top five of a Grand Tour. But the host nation enters Monday’s second rest day of La Vuelta with two stage wins already in the bag, Enric Mas the best placed rider behind the red jersey, and debutants Carlos Rodriguez and Juan Ayuso looking mature beyond their years (which, combined, still makes them younger than compatriot Alejandro Valverde).
Any question marks over Remco Evenepoel’s ability to perform on steep double-digit gradients went out of the window on Sunday’s finale when the Belgian superstar rode clear of his rivals for the red jersey on the final climb to Les Praeres to strengthen his lead in La Vuelta going into the second rest day. Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) jettisoned his rivals one by one, with defending champion Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) and Spanish debutant Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) fading before the Belgian despatched Enric Mas (Movistar) on the 25% ramp to the finish.
