There’s no prologue or rudimentary bunch sprint for the first day of this Tour. Instead, a hilly opener to and from Bilbao features 3,300m of vertical gain and includes the spiky Pike Bidea climb 10km from the finish, with an average gradient of 10% over 2km.

UAE Team Emirates rider Juan Ayuso paid tribute to Gino Mader after winning Sunday's final Tour de Suisse stage and finishing second in the general classification.

The world champion is bidding for glory in Switzerland and went on the attack with 6km to go on the climb up Villars-sur-Ollon. Ad However, a sluggish finish saw the Belgian come fourth, with Mattias Skjelmose (Trek-Segafredo) taking a victory that leaves him 17 seconds ahead of Evenepoel in the GC.
Adam Blythe believes the future is “bright and big” for Juan Ayuso following his third-place finish at La Vuelta – and thinks the 19-year-old must go to the Tour de France next year. Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) produced an impressive showing on his Grand Tour debut to make it onto the podium behind winner Remco Evenepoel and runner-up Enric Mas. Ad He is the youngest rider to finish in the top three at La Vuelta and second youngest to ever make a podium at a Grand Tour after Henri Cornet, who won the Tour de France in 1904.
Belgian Remco Evenepoel claimed the Vuelta a Espana title on Sunday for his first Grand Tour triumph, capping a dominant three weeks with one last push on the final stage from Las Rozas to Madrid that was won by Juan Sebastian Molano.
The 22-year-old dominated the three-week race, taking victory after the 21st and final stage won by Colombian Juan Sebastian Molano.
