MELBOURNE : England captain Jos Buttler declined to appeal against Australia's Matthew Wade for obstructing the field in the series-opening T20 match in Perth on Sunday but said he might be less forgiving in the upcoming World Cup.
Australia have a golden opportunity to create history and become the first back-to-back Twenty20 world champions, but they face a formidable challenge led by India and England. Aaron Finch's men enjoy the advantage of being the only winners of cricket's shortest format to have a crack at defending the title on home territory since the T20 World Cup started in 2007. With a star-studded line-up spearheaded by David Warner, Pat Cummins and Glenn Maxwell, the Australians also boast all but one of the team that won the tournament last year in the UAE.
Australia will attempt to defend the trophy they won in Dubai last year when they host the T20 World Cup this month.
The first T20I between Australia and England at Perth saw some breathtaking action, with both teams scoring 200 runs. Though England emerged triumphant in the match, there's one particular incident that they won't be happy about. Australian wicket-keeper batter Matthew Wade seemed to have 'obstructed the field' while trying to prevent Mark Wood from taking the catch. While Wade seemed to have been at fault, England skipper Jos Buttler decided not to appeal.
England went one up in their three-match Twenty20 series against Australia with a thrilling eight-run win in Perth on Sunday. After Australia were set an imposing 209 for victory, the home side at one stage looked like pulling off an unlikely win on the back of a fine 73 from David Warner and some big hitting from Marcus Stoinis. But some inspired fast bowling in the latter stages from Mark Wood (3-34) and Sam Curran (2-35) saw England home as Australia finished their 20 overs eight runs short.
There was controversy during the first T20I between Australia and England as Matthew Wade seemingly blocked Mark Wood from taking a return catch in Perth. In the 17th over of Australia's chase of 209, Wade top-edged a pull off Wood onto his helmet and the ball ballooned straight up in the air. The England pacer ran in towards the striker's end to try and take a return catch, but Wade, turning back towards the crease, extended his arm and restricted Wood from getting to the ball, which landed safely.
PERTH, Australia: Openers Alex Hales and Jos Buttler blasted half-centuries to lead England to an eight-run win over Australia on Sunday (Oct 9) in the first of three warm-up games before the T20 World Cup starts later this month.
