England chased down 299 in little over two sessions on the final day to win the high-scoring 2nd Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. With several fine knocks on display, the one that stole the show was Jonny Bairstow's brutal 92-ball 136 in the fourth innings as England showed great intent to win a match that looked headed for a draw. The game saw a total of 249 boundaries hit, comprising 229 fours and 24 sixes. This is the most boundaries hit in a Test match, breaking the record set by the drawn Sydney Test between Australia and India in 2004, which is best remembered for Sachin Tendulkar's unbeaten 241.
England have been docked two World Test Championship points and fined 40 percent of their match fee due to a slow over-rate in their second Test win against New Zealand. Match referee Richie Richardson imposed the sanction after the home side were ruled to have been two overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration. International Cricket Council rules state that players are fined 20 percent of their match fee and the team loses a Test Championship point for every over they fail to bowl in the alloted time.
After Jonny Bairstow's stunning century took England to a series-clinching victory over New Zealand in the second Test, Michael Atherton says the turnaround is a 'lesson in the value of leadership'...
Kyle Jamieson will miss the final Test against England and return home after picking up a back injury during the second match at Trent Bridge, the country's cricket board (NZC) said on Tuesday. The 27-year-old walked off the field late on day three during England's first innings and played no part in their run chase on Tuesday as a Jonny Bairstow century powered the hosts to a five-wicket win for a 2-0 lead in the series.
New Zealand will be without injured pace bowler Kyle Jamieson for the third and final Test against England, adding to their gloom after conceding the series in Nottingham on Tuesday.
Captain Ben Stokes said England's victory over New Zealand in the second test at Trent Bridge was the highlight of his career, surpassing even his Ashes heroics at Headingley in 2019 and his match-winning innings in the 50-overs World Cup the same year.
England needed to chase down a fourth innings target of 299 runs on the final day of the 2nd Test against New Zealand in little over two sessions and it led to one of the most thrilling finale's to a Test in modern day cricket. Given England's modest approach in Test cricket off late, not many would have expected them to go for the win, as they already had a 1-0 lead in the series. But this is a new England Test team, led by Ben Stokes and managed by head coach Brendon McCullum.
