Brought to tears by Ashes recollections

I buy a copy of the Guardian every day and am always glad that I do, as there is invariably an article that I feel richer and better informed for reading: often it’s the Country Diary, sometimes it’s political, occasionally music or culture. On Monday, it was sport. Jonathan Liew’s recollection of third days of Ashes test matches (What we talk about when we talk about cricketing dads isn’t as simple as Bazball, 18 June) not only enthralled me, its denouement blindsided me to the extent that I shed tears into my early evening beer in the garden. Simultaneously heartbreaking and life-affirming, it raised sports journalism to another level of emotive resonance for me.Phil RobinsonBristol

S ix years ago the German military launched Project Cassandra, a programme designed to predict disasters and black swan events by getting novelists, poets and hacks to write stories about them. What could possibly go wrong? After all, everyone knows writers are perfect in a crisis.

Pride of the Lionesses: England’s road to Euro 2022 glory – in pictures

Over little more than three weeks in July, from Manchester via Brighton, Southampton and Sheffield to Wembley, Guardian writers have followed every step of England’s journey through Women’s Euro 2022. Under Sarina Wiegman, who coached the Netherlands to success in the same tournament in 2018, the Lionesses showed they were winners.

County cricket offers more runs for your money

I read with interest Jonathan Liew’s comments on the ticket prices for the Test match at Lord’s, having noticed the increase myself (Toxic relationship with money an elephant in the long room at Lord’s, 3, June). I was also informed by comments posted online under the article about increasing ticket costs in other sports, with club football now much more expensive than the £10 to £20 it was in the 1990s.

Chelsea say farewell to ‘magician’ Ji So-yun but their future is bright

When Emma Hayes walked into the press conference room after Chelsea’s 3-2 extra-time defeat of Manchester City in the FA Cup final, she had Ji So-yun’s shirt in her hands. It was signed ‘To Emma’ and the manager placed it on the table in front of her in tribute to her departing midfielder.

Global star and Australian icon: Chelsea’s Sam Kerr has triumphed against the odds

About four years ago, as the 2017-18 Ashes reached Perth, someone organised a game of football between the travelling English media and their West Australian counterparts. We assembled on some nondescript piece of suburban scrubland, the standard was extremely mixed and after Michael Vaughan slotted home the winning penalty we all retired to the bar for the most important business of the day.
