Tadej Pogacar has opted out of the Vuelta a Espana this year to instead focus on the World Championships in Australia and the autumn one-day classics. The Slovenian had been due to race a second Grand Tour of the year, but UAE Team Emirates have confirmed that Pogacar will no longer be part of their team for the three-week Spanish race. Dave Brailsford, the Ineos director of sport, has admitted that Geraint Thomas proved doubters inside the team wrong with his resurgent performance at the Tour de France. The Welsh rider entered the race having been named as one of three co-leaders for the Ineos Grenadiers, but quickly established himself as the team's best general classification hope after winning the Tour de Suisse.

It’s a nigh-on impossible task narrowing down so much drama from over three weeks of high-octane, and at times highly emotional racing, into a baker's dozen of discrete moments but here goes nothing.
