Moments after becoming the first Belgian in 44 years to win a Grand Tour at La Vuelta, Remco Evenepoel revealed his ultimate dream to Eurosport’s Alberto Contador: “win all three.” The Belgian (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) cruised through the procession into Madrid on Sunday to deliver the first of those three titles in Spain, with his sights now turning to the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia. Ad “Win all three Grand Tours, that’s my biggest dream,” Evenepoel told seven-time Grand Tour champion Contador.
As Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) closes on a historic Vuelta triumph, attention is already turning to the 2023 Tour de France. The 22-year-old Belgian is on the cusp on winning the Spanish Grand Tour after safely traversing the final mountain tests on Stage 20. Ad Evenepoel claimed on Saturday that the Vuelta is the first Grand Tour he has entered completely healthy, and should he keep fit, many believe he can be a real threat in next year's Tour.
Ineos Grenadiers must be prepared to “lose the race massively” in a bid to unseat Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) in the red jersey at La Vuelta. The British team boast three riders in the top 10 – Carlos Rodriguez (fourth at 3’55”), Pavel Sivakov (ninth at 7’06”) and Tao Geoghegan Hart (10th at 7’37”) – but on their own, it is hard to see any of them putting Evenepoel under pressure in the second half of the race.
Jumbo-Visma sporting director Grischa Niermann says Jonas Vingegaard will race again in 2022 — but only after the Tour de France champion has had a sufficient «physical and mental break». Vingegaard stunned the cycling world with his defeat of two-time champ Tadej Pogacar at the Tour, securing his advantage with a series of remarkable performances on the mountain stages, most memorably on stage 11's climb up the Col Du Granon.
Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) will not fight for the general classification at La Vuelta, according to Eurosport expert Alberto Contador. Evenepoel is second favourite with the bookies despite having never finished a three-week race, with his Giro d’Italia debut last year unravelling spectacularly in the final week before he abandoned.
Nairo Quintana (Arkea-Samsic) will miss La Vuelta in an attempt to clear his name after breaching an in-competition ban on painkiller tramadol. Quintana was wiped from the 2022 Tour de France results on Wednesday, although the UCI said it was not a breach of anti-doping rules and he was free to continue competing. Ad However Quintana, who has denied ever using the substance, will skip the Vuelta to appeal his expulsion from the Tour at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
