Joe Root has praised England captain Ben Stokes for addressing his mental health struggles in a new documentary, saluting his “great courage and great leadership”.
England will be hoping the toss and conditions go their way after being on the backfoot from the start of the first Test at Lord's and eventually capitulating inside three days. They were undone by an impressive South African attack with four seamers rolling over the English batting order and spinner Keshav Maharaj taking a couple of wickets at the top of the innings to boot.
Ben Stokes-led England were given a reality check in the 1st Test of the three-match series against South Africa as the hosts stumbled to an innings and 12 runs loss at the Lord's Cricket Ground on Friday. The 1st Test ended inside three days as Proteas bowlers made mockery of England's batting lineup and the 'Bazball' approach was a no-show. Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada bowled fiery spells, for which, England had no answers.
England suffered their first defeat since Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum took over as the Test team's capain and coach respectively as South Africa won the first Test of the three-match series on a canter. England's aggressive approach has been termed 'Bazball' - after McCullum's nickname - but at Lord's, South Africa's pacers made short work of their batting lineup to inflict an innings defeat inside three days. Following South Africa's win, former India batter Mohammad Kaif took to Twitter to point out why 'Bazball' did not work in the match.
England vs South Africa 1st Test, Day 3 Live Score Updates:Kagiso Rabada lost his wicket early on the day while Marco Jansen continues to hold one end tight as South Africa extend lead on Friday in the ongoing first Test against England at Lord's, London. While Jansen eyes his fifty, Rabada was dismissed by Matty Potts on the third ball of the day. Earlier, South Africa resumed at the score of 289 for 7, with a 124-run lead over England. The guests had bundled out the hosts for 165 runs in the first innings, thanks to Rabada's five-wicket haul (5 for 52). Meanwhile, Anrich Nortje (3 for 63) and Marco Jansen (2 for 30) claimed the rest five wickets for South Africa. (LIVE SCORECARD)
England vs South Africa, 1st Test, Day 2 Live: England faced an early blow on Day 2 as Kagiso Rabada dismissed Ollie Pope at 73. As soon as England were eyeing a recovery with Stuart Broad and Matty Potts on the crease, Rabada struck again and sent the former back to the dugout. Currently, England's score read at 146/8, with Potts and Jack Leach, standing unbeaten at the crease. South Africa dominated the proceedings on Day 1 as the bowlers provided them with a strong hand. Rabada, Anrich Nortje, and Marco Jensen stood together and left England struggling at 116/6, at the end of Day 1. Rabada was the pick among the bowlers as he scalped three wickets in 9 overs and did not let the hosts recover. It will be interesting to see whether England will be able to turn the tide in their favour on Day 2 or not. (Live Scoreboard).
ENG vs SA 1st Test, Day 1 Live: South Africa captain Dean Elgar won the toss and elected to field in the first Test against England at Lord's beginning today. While Elgar wrote off England's 'Bazball' brand of cricket, Ben Stokes has remained adamant that their aggressive style is here to stay and the team is unperturbed by the South African skipper's comments. While England will look to continue their four-match winning streak, South Africa will want to consolidate their position atop the World Test Championship points table. Interestingly, England have won all their last four matches since Stokes took over as captain batting second, so this match will pose them with a different challenge. (LIVE SCORECARD)
England have recalled fit-again wicketkeeper Ben Foakes for the first Test against South Africa at Lord's starting on Wednesday.
