Jos Buttler Provides Big England Captaincy Update After Champions Trophy Exit

England skipper Jos Buttler said he wouldn't like to make any "emotional statements" on his captaincy but "all possibilities" are on the table after his side was shockingly eliminated from the Champions Trophy by Afghanistan on Wednesday. A listless England, barring Joe Root who smashed a century, suffered an eight-run defeat against the Afghans, and it pushed them out of the marquee event prematurely. Chasing 326 for victory, England were bundled out for 317 with Afghanistan batter Ibrahim Zadran smashing a superb 177 and pacer Azmatullah Omarzai grabbing a five-wicket haul. "I don't want to say any emotional statements right now. But I think for myself and the other guys at the top, we should consider all possibilities," said Buttler in the post match presentation on his future as the England white-ball skipper.

After Afghanistan opted to bat at the Gaddafi Stadium, Jofra Archer dismissed both Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Sediqullah Atal in the fifth over of the match. England have made just one change, bringing Jamie Overton in place of injured Brydon Carse, while Afghanistan remained unchanged. Bruised England, Afghanistan Eye Victory To Stay Afloat In Champions Trophy

A battered England will hope to keep their Champions Trophy hopes alive when they face a dangerous Afghanistan in a crucial group B match in Lahore on Wednesday. A defeat here would severely dent both the teams' dreams of a semifinal berth in the tournament, as South Africa and Australia have already notched up two points. The days of England's white ball supremacy are far behind now, as the former world champions' creaking unit even failed to defend a 350-plus total against Australia in their tournament opener.

England recalled wicketkeeper-batsman Jamie Smith on Thursday for their Champions Trophy opening game against Australia in Lahore.
