Ben Stokes savoured the feeling of leading his country to victory for the first time as captain and was delighted to share the joy with the man he replaced as skipper.
Following England's win against New Zealand in the first Test at Lord's, batter Joe Root said that he wants to bat as long as he can and win as many matches possible for his side. James Anderson and Matthew Potts shone with the ball while Root (115*) and Stokes (54) made an impact with the bat to power England to a five-wicket win over New Zealand. With this win, England have a 1-0 lead in the series. "Feels fantastic, winning a Test match after a long time is a great experience. I have really enjoyed it and looking forward to the rest of the summer. I always feel that we get great support and appreciate whether home or away and it is nice to see them (crowd). Ben has won many Tests for us when I was captain, it's a great chance for me to give it back to him."
Joe Root admitted his reign as England captain had descended into “an unhealthy relationship”, forcing his decision to resign earlier this year.
Joe Root became the latest entrant to the 10,000-run club in Test cricket, achieving the rare feat on Day 4 of the opening Test against New Zealand on Sunday. Root became only the second Englishman to reach the milestone after Alastair Cook and the 14th overall. He reached the 10,000-run mark in his 218th innings, becoming the fastest England batter to do so. Cook had reached the landmark in his 229th innings. Incidentally, Root is also the joint-youngest to reach the mark along with Cook, both of whom reached the milestone at the age of 31y 157d.
Former England captain Joe Root scored an unbeaten century to give successor Ben Stokes a winning start to his reign with a five-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord's on Sunday.
Joe Root scored an unbeaten century as England capped a dramatic fightback to win the first Test against New Zealand by five wickets at Lord's on Sunday. England, set 277 to win, finished on 279 for five, with former captain Root 115 not out after the hosts had slumped to 69 for four. Victory, achieved with more than a day to spare, was just England's second win in 18 Tests and gave them a 1-0 lead in the three-match series against World Test champions New Zealand.
Right-handed batter Joe Root brought out his best when the odds were stacked against England in the Lord's Test against New Zealand and his unbeaten century helped the Ben Stokes-led side go 1-0 up in the three-match series. Root brought up his ton on Day 4 of the first Test and along the way, he also registered 10,000 runs in Test cricket. As soon as Root brought up the landmark, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly hailed the batter, calling him an all-time great.
As Joe Root brought up his century in the fourth innings of England's first Test against New Zealand at Lord's on Sunday, he also became just the second player from the country to reach 10,000 runs in the longest format of the game after Alastair Cook. Co-incidentally, Root got there at the exact same age as Cook. Cook was 31 years and 157 days old when he reached the milestone, while Root was also 31 years and 157 days old on Sunday. The two are the joint-youngest to get to the milestone.
