PARIS : Highlights of the first day at the French Open on Sunday (times GMT):
Jessica Pegula advanced to the second round of the French Open after breezing past American compatriot Danielle Collins 6-4 6-2. Pegula kept herself in the ascendancy for the majority of a keenly fought encounter and did what was required to progress and book a second-round tie with Camila Giorgi. Ad Pegula spoke afterwards and — given her and Collins were last on court on Sunday — revealed the pre-match preparations that kept her fresh during the day.
Jessica Pegula celebrated the intense competition offered by women’s tennis' ‘Big Three' of Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka as she spoke to Eurosport ahead of the French Open. Those three have emerged as the best players on the circuit in recent months, but American Pegula has been ranked No. 3 in the world for the last half year, and she enters the French Open with high hopes.
PARIS : The largest number of U.S. tennis players in almost 30 years will set their sights on a French Open singles crown when the claycourt grand slam event gets underway on Sunday.
The French Open airs live on NBC Sports, Peacock and Tennis Channel through championship points at Roland Garros in Paris.
Iga Swiatek took another confident step towards defending her Italian Open crown by beating Lesia Tsurenko 6-2 6-0 to reach the last 16 in Rome. The world No. 1 is the firm favourite to collect a third straight title in the Italian capital after the rest of the top five seeds – Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula, Ons Jabeur and Caroline Garcia – all suffered early exits.
Another big name fell early at the Italian Open as Ons Jabeur's return from injury ended in a straight-sets defeat to Paula Badosa, but Maria Sakkari safely progressed. The Tunisian’s exit means that three of the top four seeds have failed to make it to the last 32, after Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula also suffered shock exits. Ad Badosa applied pressure on Jabeur’s serve throughout, taking five of nine break points to clinch a 6-1 6-4 victory in 70 minutes.
