World number four Jessica Pegula crashed out of Wimbledon after an untimely suspension of play helped shift the momentum in her surprise quarter-final defeat to Marketa Vondrousova.

Unseeded Marketa Vondrousova beat fourth seed Jessica Pegula in a topsy-turvy match to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals on Tuesday. The Czech player, ranked 42 in the world, clawed her way back from 4-1 down in the deciding set to win 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Pegula was quickly out of the blocks, breaking the former French Open finalist at her first opportunity but that proved a false dawn as she lost three service games in the first set, landing just 41 percent of her first serves. The American, 29, found more rhythm on her serve in the second set and cut her error count, surging into a 4-1 lead and sealing the set with her second break.
Even the world's best players are not immune to crippling nerves as Iga Swiatek discovered when her Wimbledon dreams were turned to dust in a 7-5 6-7(5) 6-2 quarter-final defeat by Ukrainian wildcard Elina Svitolina.

Mirra Andreeva has become the youngest player to make the fourth round of Wimbledon since Coco Gauff after beating Anastasia Potapova 6-2 7-5. Andreeva, 16, stormed through the first set against the 22nd seed, and though the second set was much tighter, the young prodigy showed remarkable nerve to come through in straight sets.
Jessica Pegula enjoyed one of those scarcely believable days straight out of fantasy land as her racket oozed winners left, right and centre in a 6-1 6-3 fourth-round dismantling of luckless Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko at Wimbledon on Sunday.
