French Open chiefs will discuss introducing earlier starts to showpiece night matches following the ludicrous late finish between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
Eurosport tennis expert Barbara Schett believes the WTA will speak to Roland-Garros organisers over the disparity in matches selected for the night sessions at the French Open. Of the 10 singles matches selected for the late slot on Court Philippe-Chatrier so far this year, the only women’s encounter was Alize Cornet’s second-round win over Jelena Ostapenko.
Emma Raducanu will return home for the grass-court season with Birmingham first up on the agenda as she steps up her preparations for Wimbledon.
PARIS: Alize Cornet said she was more hurt by the jeering from her home crowd than the pain from the injury that forced her to retire from her French Open third-round match against Chinese teenager Zheng Qinwen on Saturday (May 28) while trailing 6-0 3-0.
Alize Cornet hit out at a "handful of idiots" as she was booed after a thigh injury forced her to retire Saturday in her French Open third round clash against China's Zheng Qinwen. Cornet, playing at her 61st consecutive Grand Slam, called it quits while trailing her 19-year-opponent 6-0, 3-0 on Court Philippe Chatrier. "What is amazing that people had the cheek to boo me on the court when I had to abandon the match. And it was because I was in pain," said Cornet, whose left thigh was heavily strapped.
The French Open crowd were less-than-sympathetic when France's Alize Cornet was forced to retire injured during her third-round match with Qinwen Zheng. The 32-year-old was losing 6-0 3-0 and not looking at all likely to salvage a game as she struggled badly on Court Philippe-Chatrier on Saturday afternoon. Ad/> The French player, who had been supported superbly during her wins over Misaki Doi and former champion Jelena Ostapenko in the previous two rounds, did not receive such sympathetic backing on this occasion.
Alize Cornet was booed by the home crowd when she was forced to retire injured at 0-6 0-3 down in her French Open third round match. The Frenchwoman arrived onto court with both of her thighs heavily strapped and could barely move against Qinwen Zheng, who won all nine games before advancing to the second week with the world No 40's retirement, as former pro Barbara Schett admitted it could have been the 32-year-old's last appearance at her home Grand Slam.
Jelena Ostapenko had a salty reaction to her rollercoaster three-set loss in her first French Open night session match on Thursday. The 2017 champion suffered defeat to home hope Alize Cornet and covered her ears to shut out the cheers of the French fans before storming off following a frosty handshake with her conqueror.
