How the Kansas Jayhawks won the 2022 men's national championship, and what's next for both KU and the North Carolina Tar Heels

Men's college basketball has a new national champion. The Kansas Jayhawks launched a historic comeback to prevail 72-69 over the North Carolina Tar Heels in Monday night's final in New Orleans, the school's fourth national title and second under head coach Bill Self, who also led KU to the 2008 crown. Kansas made history by overcoming the largest halftime deficit ever for a national champion, trailing 40-25 at the break before storming out of the locker room with an 18-6 run that eliminated any notion of a Tar Heels runaway. The previous largest halftime deficit for a champ was 11, attained by the 2001 Duke Blue Devils and 1958 Temple Owls.

The biggest storylines of Thursday's first round of March Madness 2022

Strap in. The action is about to begin. Now that we've trimmed the teams from 68 to a neat 64, the first round of the 2022 NCAA men's tournament is set to commence. Sixteen teams will take to courts in Buffalo, Fort Worth, Indianapolis on Thursday, but there are no guarantees on who will make it through to Saturday. Will 1-seeds Gonzaga, Baylor and Kansas survive? Will No. 2 seed Kentucky handle Saint Peter's and avoid the fate that befell 2-seed Ohio State against Oral Roberts in 2021? Which player will save his team from elimination and become a household name?

What will happen between Duke and North Carolina in Coach K's final home stand?

Amid all the pageantry of Coach K's final Cameron Indoor Stadium appearance as head coach of the Duke Blue Devils on Saturday, there will be a rather important basketball game as well (6 p.m. ET, ESPN). The North Carolina Tar Heels will make the short journey to Cameron as a team trying to strengthen its position on the NCAA tournament bubble and also avenge a thoroughly one-sided 87-67 loss to its hated rivals in Chapel Hill on Feb. 5.

Can Syracuse basketball spring a Duke upset, and how these Blue Devils compare to past Duke champs

The Duke Blue Devils moved closer to their first ACC regular-season championship since 2010 with a 65-61 win over Virginia on Wednesday night, also remaining in position for what would be, stunningly, their first outright ACC regular-season title since the 2005-06 team earned that distinction. Mike Krzyzewski and Co. (24-4, 14-3) are a full game ahead of second-place Notre Dame (20-8, 13-4) heading into Saturday's Sonic Blockbuster matchup at the Syracuse Orange (6 p.m. ET, ESPN and ESPN app).
