The deadline for applying for the post of Indian men's cricket team chief coach ended on Monday but both the BCCI and the top name in its wishlist, Gautam Gambhir chose to keep mum on the development. After guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL trophy on Sunday, it is but natural that Gambhir's name is getting more momentum. While both interested parties haven't said anything on record, the BCCI, it seems, doesn't have too many quality options available at the moment.

After the exhilarating journey of more than two months, Kolkata Knight Riders stood tall against all the odds and emerged as the winners of IPL 2024. The Shreyas Iyer-led side registered a thumping eight-wicket win over the mighty Sunrisers Hyderabad, who had a marvelous season with the bat. In the summit clash, KKR comfortably dominated the proceedings as they bundled out SRH for just 113. Later, they chased down the target in just 10.3 overs and clinched their third IPL trophy.

BCCI Announces Big Cash Reward For IPL's "Unsung Heroes"

Describing them as "unsung heroes", BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Monday announced that groundsmen and curators of all the 10 regular IPL venues will be given Rs 25 lakh each as a token of appreciation for providing "brilliant pitches" during the league. The IPL concluded in Chennai on Sunday with Kolkata Knight Riders lifting their third overall trophy with an eight-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Amid lack of alternatives, because of certain overseas coaches' withdrawal, the BCCI don't seem to have many top options when it comes to finding Rahul Dravid's successor as Team India's head coach. A report has now claimed that Gambhir, who is the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024 at present, was offered a 'blank cheque' by the franchise's co-owner Shah Rukh Khan to join the franchise for the next 10 years, when he was at Lucknow Super Giants.

Kolkata Knight Riders captain Shreyas Iyer said that he was struggling with his back after the Cricket World Cup 2023 but "no one was agreeing to it". Shreyas was picked for the Test series against England after the World Cup but the batter was left out of the squad for the last three matches after he complained of back spasms. While not on national duty, Shreyas did not play domestic cricket for Mumbai despite being cleared to play by the National Cricket Academy (NCA). It resulted in BCCI not offering him a central contract as secretary Jay Shah warned players against prioritising IPL.
