India are under pressure to win their first global title since 2013 at the Twenty20 World Cup in Australia but they must do so without injured pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah.
Ahead of the big cricketing showdown at the T20 World Cup 2022, Indian cricketers are putting in the hard work in the nets and practice matches to best prepare themselves for the showpiece event. But, on their off day, the boys are out on a stroll Down Under with the birthday boy Hardik Pandya. Indian cricket superstar Virat Kohli shared a picture with Hardik and KL Rahul on the occasion of the all-rounder's birthday on Instagram.
India are under pressure to win their first global title since 2013 at the T20 World Cup in Australia but they must do so without injured pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah. Rohit Sharma's team open their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on October 23 in Melbourne in a hotly anticipated clash which could set the tone for their tournament. Top-ranked India recently won T20 series at home against Australia and South Africa and have been the team to beat in one-on-one competitions.
India's build-up to the 2022 T20 World Cup has been marred by injuries to a couple of top players. If Ravindra Jadeja's knee injury robbed India of a solid allrounder, Jasprit Bumrah's back injury meant that India would be without its pace spearhead in the marquee event. After making a comeback in the T20I series against Australia, following a lengthy rehabilitation, Bumrah again missed the T20I series against South Africa. He was then ruled out of the T20 World Cup.
The second-string Indian team would look for some stability from its openers as the hosts aim to punch above their weight and seal a memorable series victory against South Africa in the third and final ODI in New Delhi on Tuesday. After going down narrowly in the series-opener, the might of the Indian white-ball depth was in full display as the hosts won the second ODI comfortably to level the three-match series 1-1. But the Indian think tank would be a little concerned about the opening pair of captain Shikhar Dhawan and young Shubhman Gill.
Finding Jasprit Bumrah's replacement isn't the easiest of tasks. The marquee Indian pacer is out of the T20 World Cup 2022 with a back injury and will probably be out of action for months. There isn't a like-for-like replacement for Bumrah in the Indian team considering the qualities he brings, but there remain a couple of options for the selectors to choose from for the showpiece event in Australia. Among the top candidates, the choice is most likely to be made between Mohammed Shami and Deepak Chahar. Former India cricketer Parthiv Patel has given his opinion on the subject, suggesting which player among Chahar and Shami would he want to get the nod.
Team India is currently gearing up for the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia, starting October 16. India will start their campaign in the main event on October 23 with a much-awaited game against arch-rivals Pakistan. The Indian squad has already reached Australia for the T20 extravaganza and started its training on Friday. BCCI on Saturday shared a video of an interaction between Yuzvendra Chahal, Harshal Patel, Deepak Hooda and Arshdeep Singh. In the lighthearted video, Chahal teases Harshal Patel after the player tries to answer one of his questions in English.
The Shikhar Dhawan-led Team India hit the nets on Saturday ahead of the second ODI against South Africa in Ranchi. The hosts trail the three-match series 0-1, having lost the rain-hit 1st ODI in Lucknow by 9 runs. The BCCI took to social media to post some photos of the Indian cricketers undergoing training at JSCA International Stadium Complex. In the photos, the Indian players can be seen training under the watchful eyes of the Natioal Cricket Academy chief, VVS Laxman, who is filling in for Rahul Dravid as head coach, for the series.
