After almost three years in the WorldTour wilderness, Dylan Groenewegen (BikeExchange Jayco) was back on top at the Tour de France, as a less-than-likely winner of Stage 3. Groenewegen beat Wout van Aert (Jumbo Visma) by a hair's breadth, the Belgian rider finished second for the third straight stage at the 2022 Tour de France.
A day after Fabio Jakobsen, it was the turn of Dylan Groenewegen to complete his own comeback from their horror crash two years ago as he won Stage 3 of the Tour de France in Sondeborg.
Dylan Groenewegen won stage three of the Tour de France in a four-way photo finish in Sondeborg, Denmark.
It was a sweet victory for Dutchman Groenewegen who was suspended for nine months by the International Cycling Union in 2020 for causing the crash that severely injured Fabio Jakobsen at the Tour of Poland. Jakobsen won Saturday's stage two.
Playing out near the coast of the Jutland peninsula, this stage might not be as windy as the previous test and so we can expect a regular bunch finish. Stage 2 victor Fabio Jakobsen (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team) will be among the favourites as an out-and-out sprinter alongside Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck). With 182km ahead of them, the riders will set off from Vejle and travel north through the town of Jelling before moving south to the finish line in Sonderborg.
Mathias Vacek celebrated his first World Tour success by taking the penultimate stage six of the UAE Tour on Friday.
