A strong performance from top seed Iga Swiatek saw her ease past Jasmine Paolini in straight sets, 6-3 6-0, to race into the second round of the US Open. Swiatek, the world No.1, was mightily impressive in parts as she cruised past Paolini, making a bagel in the second set having been broken twice in the opening set. Ad After an inconsistent spell in which she crashed out of Wimbledon at the third round and suffered an exit in the quarter finals of the BNP Paribas Poland Open in Warsaw, Swiatek looked like she was finally recapturing her form as she wrapped up the match in 67 minutes.
The retirement party took place anyway but Serena Williams showed she is not finished yet with a 6-3 6-3 win over Danka Kovinic in the first round of the US Open.
Emma Raducanu gets her title defence under way on day two of the US Open while Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz begin their quests for glory. Raducanu comes into Flushing Meadows as the 11th seed after an inconsistent season, but the 19-year-old will be hoping to rediscover her best form as she returns to the scene of her sensational triumph last year. Ad She faces Alize Cornet of France, while top seed Iga Swiatek begins her campaign against Italy’s Jasmine Paolini.
At the 2022 U.S. Open, world No. 1 Iga Swiatek, four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka and No. 10 Emma Raducanu headline the women’s singles draw. Serena Williams and Coco Gauff landed in the bottom half of the drawing.
Serena Williams will face Danka Kovinic in the opening round of her final US Open appearance. The 23-time major winner announced earlier in the summer that she would bring the curtain down on her career at Flushing Meadows. Ad Emma Raducanu arrives in New York as the defending champion, but the Brit has a tough opening challenge as she will face off against French veteran Alize Cornet.
American Bernarda Pera cruised to an impressive 6-4, 6-1 straight-set victory against No. 1 seed Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic on Wednesday in the round of 16 of Tennis in the Land in Cleveland.
No. 1 seed Daria Kasatkina of Russia dropped a first-set tiebreak before coming back to win a marathon over Belgium's Greet Minnen 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-2 on Monday in first-round action at the Championnats Banque Nationale de Granby in Granby, Quebec.
