BIRMINGHAM, England : Veteran seamer James Anderson will replace Jamie Overton for England in the rescheduled fifth test against India at Edgbaston, the team said on Thursday.
Sam Billings will take on wicketkeeping duties for England in the rearranged fifth Test against India while James Anderson replaces Jamie Overton in the XI.
England on Thursday announced their playing XI for the rescheduled fifth Test against India that begins at Edgbaston on Friday. James Anderson, who was ruled out of the third Test against New Zealand, has returned to the team, replacing Jamie Overton. Sam Billings, who was Ben Foakes' COVID-19 replacement in the third Test against New Zealand, has been picked to keep wickets. "The Three Lions make one change to the side that won the third Test against New Zealand at Headingley, with Jimmy Anderson returning to the side in place of Jamie Overton," the England Cricket Board wrote in its official statement.
When called up for the recent New Zealand series, Matthew Potts was asked how he would approach a maiden Test appearance that had seemed so unlikely just a few months earlier.
James Anderson has seen almost everything over the course of two decades as an England player, but even he has been taken aback by the transformation that has gripped the Test team in recent weeks.
James Anderson thought he had seen it all over the course of an England career spanning nearly two decades but the Test team's transformation under new coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes has caught the veteran seamer by surprise. England brushed aside New Zealand to chase down targets of 277, 299 and 296 and complete a 3-0 series whitewash of the world Test champions in their first series under McCullum and Stokes. Anderson, who has played a record 171 Tests since his debut in 2003, said they had created a totally different vibe among the squad.

James Anderson cannot wait to rejoin a "fearless" England team, unlike any he has known in two decades of international cricket, in this week's long-delayed India series finale. Friday's match in Birmingham comes just four days after England completed a 3-0 rout of Test world champions New Zealand. Before that series, England had won just one of 17 Tests. That was against India in Leeds last year. But India fought back to lead 2-1 only for the deciding encounter to be postponed just a couple of hours before it was due to begin at Manchester's Old Trafford in September, with the tourists withdrawing due to a COVID-19 scare.
