Former South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis shared his thoughts on Thursday following Gautam Gambhir's selection as the next Indian Cricket Team's head coach. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah on Tuesday announced that former cricketer Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the Indian men's cricket team's new head coach. "It's great to see Gautam getting into the coaching side of things. He's got a really good cricket brain. He'll bring some fire and loves playing the game aggressively. I think he'll bring that added touch, and the guys will certainly learn a lot from him. He's got a lot to add and will bring significant value to that Indian side. I wish him all the best--not too much against us, but I'm sure he'll do a fantastic job," Kallis said while speaking on Star Sports.
During the clash against Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League 2024 on Saturday, Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder Sunil Narine became the third cricketer to smash 400 runs and grab 15 wickets in a single season of the cash-rich league after Shane Watson and Jacque Kallis. A fantastic comeback effort by KKR spinners helped derail MI run-chase of 158 runs, restricting them to 139/8 in 16 overs in the IPL 2024 clash at Eden Gardens on Saturday and made the two-time champions the first team to reach the playoffs.
Former Indian cricket team coach Sanjay Bangar believes that Devdutt Padikkal can make his debut during the fifth Test match against England in Dharamsala on Thursday. Rajat Patidar has failed to impress in the past couple of matches and in a recent interaction, Bangar said that the team management can bring in Padikkal considering the fact that India have already won the series. He also suggested that Kuldeep Yadav should make way for Jasprit Bumrah who will get a lot of help from the pitch.
The pitch for the fifth Test match between India and England in Dharamsala starting Thursday is expected to be a slow turner, according to a report by Indian Express. The report claimed that unseasonal rainfall has prevented the ground staff from working on the surface and the curators are expected to have a discussion with the Indian team management regarding the type of pitch that will be ultimately prepared. The Indian spinners have played a major role in ensuring the series win for the hosts and the pitch at Dharamsala is expected to be a slow turner once again with ample support for Rohit Sharma and Co.
Test cricket will see two players featuring in their 100th game together for only the fourth time when India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and England batter Jonny Bairstow take the field here on Thursday. The first such occasion was when former England captain Michael Atherton and Alec Stewart reached the landmark against the West Indies at Old Trafford back in 2000. The second instance involved three players as South Africa's Jacques Kallis, Shaun Pollock and Stephen Fleming played their 100th Test in the South Africa-New Zealand game in Centurion in 2006.
Indian cricket team skipper Rohit Sharma arrived in style for the Dharamsala Test against England starting Thursday as he landed at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in a helicopter. The rest of the team had already arrived on Sunday, but Rohit joined them on Tuesday and he also attended an event with Sports Minister Anurag Thakur in Bilaspur and played cricket with his fans. The fifth Test match between India and England is a dead rubber as the Rohit-led side has already taken an unassailable 3-1 lead over the visitors thanks to a brilliant victory in the fourth Test in Ranchi.
Pitching full length deliveries, attacking the stumps and setting straighter field placements should be the mantra for England pacers when they counter a star-studded Indian batting line-up during the upcoming Test series, says South Africa great Allan Donald. Donald had toured India in 1996 and in 1999-00. On the second occasion, South Africa managed to blank India 2-0 with four pronged pace attack comprising Donald himself, Shaun Pollock, Nantie Hayward and Jacques Kallis making life miserable for Indian batters. Donald, in fact, had dismissed Rahul Dravid at Wankhede stadium and Sachin Tendulkar at Chinnaswamy stadium during that series.
