With the Italian Open coming to a conclusion, the second Grand Slam of the year is now on the horizon.
The second Grand Slam of the tennis season is set to start in Paris on May 22 as tennis’ top stars challenge for the French Open. Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz are looking to compete for the men’s title while women’s world No. 1 Iga Swiatek is the leading contender for the women’s title.
ROME (AP) — If there’s been one point during Iga Swiatek’s three-month unbeaten run that encapsulates why the top-ranked player has become nearly impossible to beat, it's surely a 19-shot rally that she won against Ons Jabeur in the Italian Open final.
Iga Swiatek, who won her fifth tournament in a row in Rome on Sunday, will go into the French Open as top seed after consolidating her place as world number one on Monday. The 20-year-old Pole, who won the title at Roland Garros in 2020, is over 2,000 points ahead of defending French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova in the new WTA rankings. Tunisia's Madrid Open champion Ons Jabeur, who lost to Swiatek in the Italian Open final, climbed to a career-high sixth.
French Open tournament director Amelie Mauresmo says the organisers hope Rafael Nadal will be able to compete at Roland-Garros this year. Nadal lost to Denis Shapovalov in three sets at the Madrid Open last week and the 21-time Grand Slam winner admitted afterwards he is suffering with a foot injury that he has to live with. Ad/> It was Nadal’s earliest exit in Rome since 2008, and it raised questions about his fitness ahead of the French Open, which starts on May 22.
Novak Djokovic will be aiming for a record-equalling 21st Grand Slam title when the French Open starts on May 22. Djokovic is defending men’s champion and will be hoping to overcome the challenges from Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas to win in Paris. Ad/> Iga Swiatek is the strong favourite for the women’s title after her stunning form over the last few months.
Novak Djokovic sealed his sixth Italian Open title with a 6-0 7-5 victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas on Sunday and insisted he could not have asked for a better lead up to Roland Garros.
Iga Swiatek made it a remarkable 28 wins in a row after thrashing Ons Jabeur 6-2, 6-2 in the Italian Open final on Sunday.
