World No. 1 Iga Swiatek suffered a shock loss to Caroline Garcia in the quarter-finals of the Poland Open in Warsaw. Swiatek, who is returning to the WTA Tour after seeing her 37-match winning run ended in the third round of Wimbledon earlier this month, lost 1-6 6-1 4-6.
When it comes to winning streaks the end is always usually more memorable than the beginning. Certainly that was the case with Iga Swiatek’s 37-match unbeaten run, the longest on the WTA Tour this century, which started against Viktorija Golubic in Doha in February and ended in surprisingly one-sided fashion against Alize Cornet at Wimbledon on July 2. Now Swiatek is starting again, returning to action at the Poland Open in Warsaw this week, hoping to spark another streak ahead of the North American swing.

The world number one defeated her 146th-ranked Romanian opponent to extend her clay run to 18 wins, and putting her overall record for 2022 at 48-4. French Open champion Swiatek has not lost a match on clay since the 2021 Roland Garros quarter-finals.
Iga Swiatek beat Gabriela Lee 6-3 6-2 in Warsaw to reach the quarter-finals of the Poland Open, extending her unbeaten run on clay courts to 18 matches. The French Open champion romped to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the Warsaw clay-court event in her first match since suffering a shock third-round defeat by Alize Cornet in the Wimbledon third round. Swiatek had been on a remarkable 37-match winning streak before that loss, taking six successive titles along the way.
