Jannik Sinner became world number one after Novak Djokovic’s worst fears were realised when he had to withdraw from his French Open quarter-final against Casper Ruud with a knee injury.
PARIS : Novak Djokovic's French Open title defence ended with a whimper following the top seed's withdrawal due to a right knee problem while Jannik Sinner celebrated his imminent takeover as world number one with a crushing win over Grigor Dimitrov on Tuesday.
Novak Djokovic's worst fears materialised as a knee injury forced him out of the French Open on Tuesday, while women's reigning champion Iga Swiatek surged into the semi-finals with another ruthless display. World number one and 24-time Grand Slam winner Djokovic withdrew ahead of his quarter-final against Casper Ruud after a scan revealed a "medial meniscus tear" in his right knee. The 37-year-old Djokovic had blamed the "slippery" Roland Garros courts for aggravating the problem during his last-16 win on Monday. "I am really sad to announce that I have to withdraw from Roland Garros," Djokovic wrote on social media. "My team and I had to make a tough decision after careful consideration and consultation." Ruud, who lost to Djokovic in last year's final, will receive a walkover and play Alexander Zverev or Alex de Minaur in the semi-finals on Friday.
Iga Swiatek will meet Coco Gauff for a place in the final of the French Open in the 12th instalment of what has, so far, been a one-sided rivalry.
PARIS : Coco Gauff's game intelligence and fighting spirit will go a long way in establishing herself in the "Big Four" of women's tennis, Tunisia's Ons Jabeur said after losing to the American in the French Open quarter-finals on Tuesday.
PARIS: Defending champion Iga Swiatek's quest for a fourth French Open title hit top gear as she swatted aside former runner-up Marketa Vondrousova 6-0 6-2 in 62 minutes on Tuesday (Jun 4) to reach the semi-finals.
