German tennis player Angelique Kerber's playing career has ended with a defeat to China's Qinwen Zheng in the 2024 Paris Olympics women's singles quarterfinals at Court Philippe-Chartier. In the men's section, Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, who battled in the Wimbledon final recently, continued their quest as they reached the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Angelique, a three-time Grand Slam champion and silver medalist in this event at the 2016 Rio Olympics, had announced before the start of the Paris 2024 quadrennial event that this tournament would mark the finish of her professional tennis career.
Iga Swiatek dropped to her knees on the court and clutched at her midsection after getting hit by a ball during a point in the Paris Olympics singles quarterfinals Wednesday, but it was her opponent, Danielle Collins of the United States, who stopped playing later in the third set.

PARIS — Coco Gauff lost in women's doubles at the Paris Olympics on Wednesday, a day after her tearful exit in singles.
Rafael Nadal kept alive his dream of a third Olympic gold on Tuesday, powering into the men's doubles quarter-finals alongside teammate Carlos Alcaraz as Andy Murray once again came back from the dead. A tearful Coco Gauff crashed out of the singles after a heated row with the umpire but women's top seed Iga Swiatek cruised into the last eight. In the men's draw, defending champion Alexander Zverev reached the third round after beating Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic in straight sets and was joined in the last 16 by Russia's Daniil Medvedev, playing as a neutral.
PARIS — The scene felt all too familiar to Coco Gauff. An officiating decision she was sure was wrong. A chair umpire who wouldn't listen. Tears streaming down her cheeks. And, most disappointing of all, a loss, this time at the Paris Olympics.
Novak Djokovic criticised Olympic entry rules after a one-sided victory over Matthew Ebden in the opening round at a rainy Roland Garros.
