NEW YORK — Serena Williams' first opponent at what is expected to be the last tournament of her career, the US Open, will be Danka Kovinic.
Dominic Thiem, the 2020 champion, and Grand Slam title winners Venus Williams and Sofia Kenin were among those named Wednesday as wild cards for the US Open main draw. The US Tennis Association announced the recipients ahead of the August 29 start of the year's final Grand Slam tournament at New York. Austrian Thiem, the former world number three now ranked 228th, has returned to competition after a long layoff due to a wrist injury.

Venus Williams will make her return to the US Open, after being sidelined in 2021, when the event gets underway on Aug. 29 in New York.
Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic were on the official US Open entry lists released Wednesday, but that doesn't mean they'll necessarily play in the tournament — and in Djokovic's case, he can't, as of now, because he isn't vaccinated against COVID-19.
Serena Williams will continue her comeback at the National Bank Open in Toronto next month.
