The Ahmedabad franchise of the Indian Premier League officially announced its new name as Gujarat Titans on Thursday. The franchise will be playing in IPL 2022, which will be its first ever season in the league, along with Lucknow Super Giants. The announcement has been met with lot of fanfare from cricket followers and the new team's fan base. The franchise posted a tweet which had "Shubh Aarambh" written on it, which in English means "Good Start".
Indian Premier League will be called the Gujarat Titans, the franchise announced on Wednesday. The franchise, owned by private equity firm CVC Capital and to be led by India all-rounder Hardik Pandya, said the name was chosen to pay tribute to the state's rich cricketing legacy. “Debuting in the 15th season of the IPL, the Gujarat Titans will pay tribute to the state's rich cricketing legacy, which has seen it produce countless Indian international cricket legends over the years,” the franchise said in statement on Wednesday.
KL Rahul back, Dhawan and Shreyas cleared to train after negative testsOne of the things Rahul Dravid did during his stints as India 'A' coach, under-19 coach, or in his position as head of the coaching staff of the Rajasthan and Delhi IPL franchises, was tinkering with the teams and batting order. He always looked to put players in new situations and take them out of their comfort zones. Sometimes, the results hurt the team's cause and affected their progress in the tournament. But it helped him unearth talent and see if players were up for the fight. Players like Sanju Samson, Rishabh Pant, Ishan Kishan, Karun Nair, Hardik Pandya, Shubman Gill, Deepak Chahar, Mohammed Siraj, Shreyas Iyer are just a few names that come to mind who have been under Dravid's wings at some point. "I tell them upfront, if you come on an 'A' tour with me, you will not leave here without playing a game. I've had that personal experience myself as a kid: going on an 'A' tour and not getting an opportunity is terrible," Dravid had said.
All-rounder Hardik Pandya will skip the Ranji Trophy starting on February 10 to focus on his India comeback in white-ball cricket. Kedar Devdhar was named skipper of the Baroda team on Monday. Vishnu Solanki was named Devdhar's deputy as the Baroda Cricket Association announced a 20-member squad ahead of the first phase of the tournament. However, Hardik's name is missing from the squad list.
Ahead of the upcoming Prime Volleyball League, Kolkata Thunderbolts captain Ashwal Rai spoke about his expectations from the tournament. Kolkata Thunderbolts will kick off their Prime Volleyball League (PVL) campaign starting from Monday next week. "I think MS Dhoni, Hardik Pandya, and KL Rahul would make very good volleyball players. Dhoni and Pandya can do passing and Rahul can do attack. There was a video of them playing beach volleyball in Dubai, we would feel good if we get a chance to play volleyball with them," Ashwal told ANI.
Hardik Pandya received plenty of criticism after Team India's early exit from the T20 World Cup last year. Many fans and experts felt that the all-rounder wasn't fully fit which prevented him from bowling in the opener against Pakistan. The 28-year-old has been suffering from a back injury for quite some time which saw him play as a batter for most part of 2021. He also played solely as a batter for Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2021 but did bowl for India in two T20 World Cup matches, against Afghanistan and New Zealand. Speaking to cricket historian Boria Majumdar, Hardik revealed that he "wasn't supposed to bowl" and "was selected in the team as a batter".
Hardik Pandya's bowling fitness status in the past couple of years had led to conjectures about his apparent "lack of communication" with national selectors and team management but the flamboyant all-rounder on Tuesday made it clear that "everyone knows" where he stood. Pandya's back problem had led to him not bowling a lot in the past two years but he intends to "surprise" everyone during the upcoming Indian Premier League where he would be captaining the CVC-owned Ahmedabad franchise.
