Hockey World Cup: Post debacle, it's time to fix accountability

India hockey coach Graham Reid quits after poor World Cup show; analytical coach Clark, scientific adviser Pemberton resign tooBHUBANESWAR: Hiring and firing coaches is nothing new. In fact, that's the only constant in Indian hockey. Less than 24 hours after the conclusion of the FIH World Cup, Indian hockey's off-field magnum opus began on Monday with the 'resignation' of chief coach Graham Reid and his team including analytical coach Greg Clark and scientific advisor Mitchell David Pemberton. This curtails their contract which is until the 2024 Paris Olympics.Hockey India has said that they will serve a three-month notice period, which probably gives the former time to work out the new coaching team. That said, this knee-jerk reaction leaves the team in the lurch, especially with eight months to go for the Asian Games. While the cracks in the Indian think-tank started to appear last year, the cookie crumbled following the hosts' ninth-place finish at the World Cup.

Hockey World Cup: Too many mistakes confound India’s coach Graham Reid

BHUBANESWAR: All the noise at the Kalinga stadium here on Sunday night came from a small group of players dressed in black. As New Zealand celebrated their victory over India, a deathly silence hung all around. For a while, Indian players were too stunned to even exchange commiserations. At one end of the ground, Akashdeep Singh and Hardik Singh sat inside a goal, lost in thought. What went wrong? Indian chief coach Graham Reid was just as baffled as the rest of the hockey world. Asked why India struggled to convert circle penetration and what was lacking, the Australian replied straight-faced: “It’s interesting, it is a very good question. I don’t know the answer.” TEAM SELECTION

Another fan was travelling to Bhubaneswar with his wife and nine-month-old kid to watch India in the quarterfinals of the World Cup when India's struggle and New Zealand's control in the crossover game on Sunday were giving jitters to the family."Welcome to Odisha...there's a lot to offer in Odisha beyond hockey," a tweet responding to the family's dismay read.

Hockey World Cup: India's game of 'numbers' in race to quarters, but Wales have nothing to lose

The word 'easy' had a lot of context. The draw against England was thrilling, but both teams had just a point to show for it. No goals. Hardik Singh's injury made India more jittery about a top-place finish in Pool D for a direct spot in the last-eight. And England had their noses slightly in front with a better goal difference, thanks to their 5-0 hammering of Wales.Spain are not out yet either. They lost 0-2 to India but came back to wallop Wales 5-1 and covered some of the lost ground in the race to the quarterfinals.

Great Chance For Indian Hockey Team To Finish On Podium In Next Year's World Cup: Vasudevan Baskaran

India need to draw confidence from their Tokyo Olympics campaign and forget the rout at the Commonwealth Games final to claim a podium finish in next year's men's hockey World Cup, feels former captain and coach Vasudevan Baskaran. "I believe they (India) can definitely finish on the podium in Odisha this time. They should move on from the CWG final loss to Australia and ride on the confidence they gained from the Tokyo Olympic Games," said Baskaran, who was the captain of India's 1980 Olympics gold medal winning team. "The team is in the good hands of Graham Reid and the support staff. I believe they have a sure shot at a medal." Baskaran stressed on the need to make a positive start against Spain in the World Cup to be jointly hosted by Bhubaneswar and Rourkela from January 13 to 29.
