It was seemingly the natural way of things – a predictable result in a flawless setting on the beachside streets of Wollongong, as Ellen van Dijk defended her women’s individual time trial crown and the Dutch national team won the sixth edition of the race over the past decade.
SYDNEY :Dutchwoman Ellen van Dijk retained her time trial title and the rainbow jersey for another year with a blistering ride to see off Australian Grace Brown at the road cycling world championships in Wollongong on Sunday.
Grace Brown (FDJ Suez Futuroscope) timed her sprint to perfection to win Stage 3 at La Madrid Challenge from a two-woman break. Inside the last 10km, Brown broke free from a reduced bunch with Elise Chabbey (Canyon-SRAM). Having made it to the final straight and assured that victory would come from one of them, the Australian loitered in the slipstream of the Swiss rider until the last possible moment.
Geraint Thomas took third place at the Commonwealth Games time trial on Thursday afternoon despite a huge early setback after falling off his bike. Thomas had been one of the favourites going into the race but suffered a huge setback when he crashed early on. The incident cost him around 30 seconds, and he was 28.49 seconds off gold at the race finish.

No-one could match the acceleration of Lorena Wiebes (Team DSM) at the finish, as the Dutchwoman won for the third time this week. But it was the tactical superiority and leg speed of the Italian that made the difference in the battle for the overall title.
