MELBOURNE:Two-time World Cup champion Glenn Maxwell is retiring from one-day international cricket in a bid to play a role in Australia’s push for a Twenty20 world title next year.Cricket Australia confirmed Maxwell’s decision Monday. The 36-year-old Maxwell played 149 ODIs for Australia in an enduring career that is memorable for his unbeaten double-century in the 2023 World Cup, his unconventional shot-making and his brilliant fielding.Maxwell said the physical toll of the ODI game, which can take up to eight hours and be played on short turnarounds, was beginning to impact on his fielding ability and he didn’t think he’d make it to the 2027 World Cup.“I always said I wasn’t going to hand my position over if I felt like I was still good enough to play.
It has been a fascinating 18th edition at the Indian Premier League (IPL) with a lot of drama, both, on and off the field. The tournament resumed again on the 17th of May after a 10-day hiatus due to political tensions between India and Pakistan. While the season has witnessed some memorable performances, there have been a few big players who haven't lived up to their reputation and failed miserably this year. From Rishabh Pant to Glenn Maxwell to Jake Fraser-McGurk, from Mohammed Shami to Rachin Ravindra - we look at five stars who haven't quite twinkled in this edition.
Actor Preity Zinta on Tuesday schooled a netizen for asking her a distasteful question during an interaction session on social media platform X. The user asked in jest if the reason behind cricketer Glenn Maxwell's poor performance in the ongoing IPL 2025 during his return season for Punjab Kings (PBKS) was because of the fact that "he and the actress did not marry. The query did not go down well with Zinta as in response she urged the netizen to "give her respect and stop with the gender bias". "Mam Maxwell ki aapse shadi ni Hui isiliye vo aapko team se accha ni khelta tha?" the user posted.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is nearing its business end, with the names of the teams set to enter the next round of fixtures getting finalized. The likes of Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Rajasthan Royals have already been knocked out from the top 4 race, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Mumbai Indians, and Gujarat Titans are in the strongest position to qualify for the knockouts. Since the start of the tournament in March, plenty of players have punched above their weight, producing memorable shows, while there are those too, who have disappointed.
Punjab Kings (PBKS) have signed Australian Mitchell Owen as the injury replacement for star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who was ruled out for the remainder of IPL 2025 due to a broken fracture earlier this week. Owen, who is currently playing for Peshawar Zalmi in Pakistan Super League, will join PBKS for Rs 3 crore. Owen was the leading run-scorer of Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25, smashing 452 runs at a strike-rate of over 200 to help Hobart Hurricanes lift their first title.
Lucknow Super Giants skipper Rishabh Pant's woeful form with the bat and Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer's sublime touch have made Sunday's mid-table clash an engrossing contest—one that could decisively shape the fortunes of either side as the IPL enters its business end. Iyer's understanding of game situations and his evolution as a captain, without compromising on his batting, have served PBKS well. In their last game, the PBKS captain struck his fourth half-century of the season, helping his side to a creditable fourth spot on the table with 13 points from 10 games.
Punjab Kings (PBKS) head coach Ricky Ponting addressed the injury crisis within the squad after Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell was ruled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to a finger injury. Maxwell broke his finger during training, making him the second PBKS player to get sidelined after New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson also had a season-ending injury at the start of the tournament. On Wednesday, PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer revealed they haven't yet decided on Ferguson and Maxwell's replacements.
