IPL 2022, RCB vs GT: Royal Challengers Bangalore face must-win situation against Gujarat Titans in final league game

Three heavy losses to Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans, which saw their net run rate plummet, cost them dear. Losing the penultimate league encounter by 54 runs to Punjab Kings made things worse for the Faf du Plessis-led side. This has left RCB with a must-win final league contest against table-toppers Gujarat Titans in Mumbai on Thursday. To keep the playoffs door ajar, a win alone will not suffice. RCB will hope to ride on their good luck and misfortune of other teams.

IPL 2022: Jonny Bairstow set it up for us, says Liam Livingstone after Punjab Kings' win over RCB

Punjab Kings' all-rounder Liam Livingstone credited his compatriot Jonny Bairstow with setting the tone for his team's comprehensive 54-run over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) with a blazing knock in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match at the Brabourne Stadium here on Friday. Bairstow hammered 66 off 29 deliveries, hitting four boundaries and seven huge sixes in a brilliant display of power-hitting that set the stage for Livingstone's 42-ball 70 that took Punjab Kings to 209/9 in 20 overs. In reply, RCB were restricted to 155/9, with the team from the south losing its momentum after former skipper Virat Kohli and his successor Faf du Plessis were out in the powerplay with the score 34/2 in the fifth over. Rajat Patidar (26) and Glenn Maxwell (35) raised 51 runs for the fourth wicket but once they were dismissed, RCB's chase lost steam.

IPL 2022, RCB vs PBKS: Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone fifties set up Punjab Kings’ clinical 54-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore

Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Brabourne stadium in Mumbai on Friday night, Jonny Bairstow had scored a total of 104 runs (85 balls) in the previous five matches. It was with a 40-ball 56 against Rajasthan Royals on Saturday that the Punjab Kings wicketkeeper-batsman had got into the groove. But on Friday, the 32-year-old operated on a different plane, taking the RCB bowlers to the cleaners in Powerplay. With his 29-ball 66 (4x4; 7x6) the Englishman got Punjab off to a dream start with 81 runs coming off the first six overs. If Bairstow powered the beginning, Liam Livingstone anchored the finish of Punjab’s innings with his 70 coming off 42 balls, which enabled Punjab to finish their quota with 209/9.

IPL 2022, Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Punjab Kings Highlights: PBKS crush RCB by 54 runs to keep play-off hopes alive

Punjab Kings buried Royal Challengers Bangalore under a deluge of runs as they kept their play-off hopes alive with 54-run victory, riding on superb half-centuries from Jonny Bairstow and Liam Livingstone in an IPL match on Friday. Bairstow (66 off 29 balls) and Livingstone (70 off 42 balls) propelled Punjab Kings to 209 for 9 in a must-win game and the scoreboard was always going to be telling as RCB were restricted to 155 for 9 in 20 overs. As it happened | Scorecard | Points TableWhile Punjab remained in the mix with 12 points from as many games, the margin of victory considerably improved their net run-rate to +0.210 and RCB despite having 14 points from 13 games are at -0.323. RCB will have to win their final game and move to 16 points but also now need to have some rub of the green with a few favourable results going their way. It was another day and another failure for Virat Kohli (20), who got a faint under-edge tickle on his gloves before it hit his thigh pad and bobbed up to short fine leg off a Kagiso Rabada (4-0-21-3) delivery. Rabada was literally unplayable on the day as he worked at a good pace and hit the ideal fuller length for the better part of his spell.
