The 2022 Tour de France embarks Friday with a challenging 3,350km course along the fjords and bridges of Denmark before arriving at French peaks and plains with stop-offs in Belgium and Switzerland on the route.
Two-time Tour de France winner Alberto Contador believes Geraint Thomas and Adam Yates represent the best hopes for Great Britain at this year’s edition, but warned against ruling out Mark Cavendish in future editions. Thomas and Yates are part of a three-prong attack for Ineos Grenadiers alongside Dani Martinez and the team are going to go into the race without naming an outright leader, preferring to wait to see how the race unfolds.
Geraint Thomas was happy to hear his prospects for yellow at this year’s Tour de France talked up by “Grandad Brad” Wiggins but insisted he will take things as they come over the next three weeks.
The 109th Tour de France will begin with a short time trial on the streets of Copenhagen on Friday.

Primoz Roglic, the man who was cruelly unseated from yellow on the last competitive stage in 2020, and Geraint Thomas, the rejuvenated 2018 champion, are among those fancying a pop at the youngster – and both Ineos Grenadiers and Jumbo-Visma have assembled fierce squads in an attempt to crack him.
The Ineos Grenadiers have confirmed their eight-man line-up for the 2022 Tour de France, and will be fronted by the star-studded GC trio of Geraint Thomas, Dani Martinez and Adam Yates. Thomas was the 2018 Tour winner and tasted success in this year’s Tour de Suisse. Meanwhile, Martinez emerged victorious in the Tour of the Basque Country and Yates has won multiple Tour stages.
