German Nico Denz won stage 14 of the Giro d'Italia on Saturday with another powerful sprint to the finish line of the rain-soaked 193km ride from Sierre to Cassano Magnago, while France's Bruno Armirail seized the leader's maglia rosa jersey.
Nico Denz (Bora-hansgrohe) doubled up at the Giro d’Italia after pulling off an incredible win on Stage 14, while Bruno Armirail (Groupama–FDJ) sailed into the maglia rosa as Ineos Grenadiers chose to give it away. The German, who also won Stage 12, hauled a five-strong chase group into contention in the finale, joining the leading trio of Stefano Oldani (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Davide Ballerini (Soudal Quick-Step) and Tom Skujins (Trek–Segafredo) inside the last kilometre.
Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) hit out at criticism from older riders by delivering a withering putdown, as he prepared for Stage 14 at the Giro d’Italia. Friday’s Stage 13 was held in dreadful conditions and it forced a planned 200km course to be reduced to just 80km, with the first climb expunged from the course.
Stage 14 of the Giro d’Italia will see the riders begin in Sierre and cross the border into Switzerland, before making their way back towards Italy in a thrilling downhill finish. Mads Pedersen has withdrawn from the Giro d’Italia after becoming ill with a cough and throat infection. The Danish rider’s team, Trek-Segafredo confirmed the news on their Twitter account on Friday morning.
