NYBORG, Denmark : Dutchman Fabio Jakobsen claimed the second stage of the Tour de France, a 202.2-km flat ride from Roskilde to Nyborg, in a stunning sprint finish after edging out Wout van Aert and Mads Pedersen on Saturday.
Fabio Jakobsen (QuickStep — Alpha Vinyl) emerged unscathed from a chaotic climax to claim the first road stage of the Tour de France 2022 in a sprint finish. In victory the Dutch debutant completed his comeback from the live-threatening crash at the Tour of Poland two years ago, delivered on a great promise, and justified his favoured sprinter status — not to mention his team selection in the first place.
Fabio Jakobsen, a Dutchman who less than two years ago was in a medically induced coma after a race crash, won the second stage of his debut Tour de France in a sprint finish.
Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl’s treatment of Mark Cavendish in the build-up to the Tour de France was “disgraceful”, claims Matt Stephens on the latest episode of The Bradley Wiggins Show. Cavendish was overlooked for the Tour despite winning four stages to draw level with Eddy Merckx’s all-time record (34) and the green jersey last year, with Quick-Step instead naming Fabio Jakobsen as their sprinter. Jakobsen is also plotting one of the sport’s great comebacks after fighting back from devastating injuries suffered at the 2020 Tour of Poland.
Last year Mark Cavendish won a second green jersey a decade after his first with four sprint victories that saw him draw level with Eddy Merckx’s long-standing Tour de France record of 34 stage wins. But the Manxman’s snub by his Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl team means we will have to wait at least another year to see Cavendish attempt to become the outright record stage record holder – and probably in the colours of a different team.
On Monday afternoon, Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl announced their squad for the Tour de France, and in so doing finally answered the question that has been hanging over the team since the start of the season: which of their star strikers will lead the line for three weeks in July? Much of the media reaction — at least on this side of La Manche — has focussed on the (Manx)man who was not among the eight. Under-remarked upon was quite what an achievement it is for Fabio Jakobsen to be selected. Mark Cavendish has not been handed a Tour de France place, his QuickStep-AlphaVinyl team have confirmed.
