Fabio Jakobsen (QuickStep-AlphaVinyl) triumphed in a last-gasp sprint to deny the breakaway in the final seconds of a thrilling Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne. It looked as though the winner would come from a three-man break as the race entered the final straight, but the bunch soared past them with just metres to spare as Jakobsen saw off Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) in the finale.
Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) proved the toughest on the final climb to win Stage 4 at the UAE Tour as he moved into the leader’s jersey. The pack was slowly whittled down in the 40km as the race climbed to Jebel Jais, but there was still a bulging front group as the race entered the final 4km. Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team’s Remco Evenepoel has won Stage 4 of the Volta ao Algarve, taking the yellow jersey ahead of the fifth and final stage on Sunday. With Stage 4 consisting of a 32.2-kilometre time trial from Vila Real de Santo Antonio to Tavira, beginning and ending with long, flat stretches either side of an elevated middle section, those who rode well on the ascent were always likely to triumph.
Fabio Jakobsen secured his second stage victory of the 2022 Volta ao Algarve, taking the win in a bunch sprint into Faro. After the longest stage of five to be held in picturesque Portugal, Jakobsen held his speed up a deceptive ramp to the line after another outstanding job from Remco Evenepoel to string out the peloton. Aleksandr Vlasov (Bora-Hansgrohe) secured the overall win at the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, with QuickStep-AlphaVinyl’s Fabio Jakobsen securing the stage 5 win. Jakobsen was assisted by teammates Remco Evenepoel and Yves Lampaert with three kilometres remaining, with the team lead-out man Michael Morkov also helping out at the death.
