Richard Carapaz of Ineos Grenadiers bagged another win in the Vuelta a Espana on stage 14, a 160km ride from Montoro to Sierra de La Pandera on Saturday, while Primoz Roglic attacked Remco Evenepoel to reduce the gap in the hunt for the leader's red jersey.
After Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) finally won his first stage at La Vuelta, attention turns back to the fight for red as Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) looks to hold onto his big lead in the general classification. Evenepoel leads Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) by 2’41” with Enric Mas (Movistar) a further 22 seconds adrift. Ad Saturday’s stage is the first of two summit finishes this weekend which could shake-up the standings, even if Evenepoel has shown very few signs of cracking so far.
After Richard Carapaz managed to save his Vuelta with victory on Penas Blancas on Thursday, many other riders will look to use the summit showdowns on La Pandera and the Alto Hoya de la Mora to mastermind their own return to the top table. For the man in red, Remco Evenepoel, Sunday’s blockbuster finale in the Sierra Nevada will not only be a chance to extend his lead at the top of the standings, but will also give the 22-year-old the opportunity to put another myth to bed – namely his inability to perform over long, tough climbs at altitude.
There’s something about Stage 13 on Fridays in Grand Tours that makes Mads Pedersen click. Just as he did on the Tour de France this July, the Dane blasted clear to take a maiden triumph on La Vuelta with a perfect finish from the Trek-Segafredo star.
PENAS BLANCAS, Spain: Richard Carapaz of Ineos Grenadiers won stage 12 of the Vuelta a Espana on Thursday after attacking from a small group of riders on a long-range escape.
The relegation debate is going to rage «on and on” as Covid impacts the scrap for points as teams battle to secure their WorldTour status, says Eurosport expert Dan Lloyd. The top 18 teams with the most UCI points in the three seasons between 2020-2022 will earn their WorldTour licence for the next triennium from 2023-2025. Ad Lotto Soudal and Israel-Premier Tech are the two WorldTour teams currently staring at the drop, with Movistar and BikeExchange-Jayco at serious risk of being dragged in.
VALENCIA, Spain: Remco Evenepoel won stage 10 of the Vuelta a Espana on Tuesday, extending his overall lead in the race by dominating a flat 30.9km individual time-trial from Elche to Alicante.
Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) has a big opportunity to extend his lead in this year’s La Vuelta on Tuesday as a time trial awaits the riders following their rest day. After taking more time out of his rivals on Sunday’s summit finish Les Praeres, Evenepoel is favourite to go on and win his first Grand Tour. Ad The flat parcour for Stage 10’s time trial will suit the Belgian, who is 1’12” ahead of Enric Mas (Movistar) and 1’53” in front of Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma).
