NEW YORK: Frenchwoman Clara Burel joined the growing list of giant-killing qualifiers at this year's US Open as she toppled Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina 6-4 6-4 in the first round at Flushing Meadows on Tuesday (Aug 30).
Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina crashed out of the US Open at the first hurdle on Tuesday, slumping to a straight sets defeat against French qualifier Clara Burel.
Ons Jabeur started her bid for a first Grand Slam title with a straight sets win over American Madison Brengle in the US Open first round on Monday, as the Tunisian fifth seed aims to go one step further than her historic run to the Wimbledon final.
‘I don’t feel like a Wimbledon champion’ Last month, Elena Rybakina did something every single tennis player aspires to achieve: She clinched the Wimbledon title to become a Grand Slam champion for the first time. Ad Back on the major stage for the US Open in New York, the 23-year-old made a somewhat surprising admission, saying her experience since that triumph “has not been the greatest” and that she didn’t feel like the reigning Wimbledon champion.
In just over a month after winning her maiden grand slam title, Kazakh Elena Rybakina said it was a "pity" that she does not feel like the Wimbledon champion because of the absence of rankings points at the tournament.
Rybakina realised a lifelong dream last month when she claimed a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ons Jabeur in the Wimbledon final to claim her first Grand Slam title. But speaking ahead of the US Open on Friday, Rybakina said she doesn't feel as if her career has benefited from the boost that would normally come with her Wimbledon crown. In normal circumstances, winning the prestigious grass-court showpiece would have catapulted the 23-year-old into the top 10, and comfortably on course for a place at the season-ending WTA Finals.
