ROME: Primoz Roglic expanded his Grand Tour portfolio by winning the Giro d’Italia on Sunday to add to his three Spanish Vuelta titles; while Mark Cavendish won the 21st and final stage less than a week after announcing that he will retire at the end of the season.
Geraint Thomas believes Mark Cavendish, who announced his retirement at the end of the current season, is the “greatest sprinter of all time" and says it has been «an honour to ride with him». Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan) was lauded for his incredible bike handling on The Breakaway despite crashing in a dramatic sprint on Stage 5 at the Giro d’Italia. A hellish day saw pre-race favourite Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) crash twice – once after a dog ran into the peloton – and Cavendish slide on his torso across the finish line behind winner Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck).
All-time cycling great Eddy Merckx believes Tadej Pogacar «can win everything» after winning a maiden Tour of Flanders title. The two-time Tour de France champion produced a stunning solo attack on the penultimate climb to pass lone leader Mads Pedersen and said afterwards he «could retire after today and be proud of my career». Ad Pogacar now only needs Milano-San Remo and Paris-Roubaix to complete the Monument sweep; a feat only pulled off by Merckx, Rik Van Looy and Roger De Vlaeminck.

The two-time Tour de France champion, who somehow contrived to finish fourth in a two-horse race in 2022, made his decisive attack on the penultimate climb – the Oude Kwaremont – distancing Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin–Deceuninck) and quickly reeling in, and then passing, lone leader Mads Pedersen (Trek–Segafredo). Ad He crested the final climb – the Paterberg – with a 14-second lead over Van der Poel, leaving a 12km time trial into the finish in Oudenaard.
