BROOKLINE, Mass. (AP) — Phil Mickelson isn't giving up on playing on the PGA Tour again, even if he is currently not welcome there.
Jay Monahan is the man behind the scenes, the string puller, but the PGA Tour commissioner was thrust front and centre when the LIV Golf Series kicked off. All scenarios were hypothetical until a ball was struck. Within half an hour of the tee shots in St Albans, Monahan issued a statement saying all players taking part in LIV Golf would be suspended from the PGA Tour.
PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan has continued his feud with the controversial LIV Golf Series, labelling the eight-event series an exhibition, whilst sending out a fierce warning to those that have competed. The inaugural event of the Saudi-backed breakaway circuit was played out in St Albans last week, with world No. 117 Charl Schwartzel taking home the £3.8 million winning prize money.
Dustin Johnson resigns from PGA Tour to play LIV Golf Series
The only exceptions were Collin Morikawa, who had played just one Major before his PGA Championship win in 2020 (a solid but unspectacular top 40), and Phil Mickelson, who succeeded Morikawa and was apparently in his golfing dotage.
PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan has defended the punishment meted out to players who have switched to the LIV Golf Invitational Series.
PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan described the Saudi-funded league that has signed up Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau as a "series of exhibition matches" that spends billions of dollars on players without getting a return on its investment.
The PGA Tour's reaction to the LIV Golf Invitational Series has been pretty clear, with Commissioner Jay Monahan banning all players who are teeing it up in the Saudi-backed LIV series and those who play in future events.
