BERLIN :Croatia's Donna Vekic had to play twice on Saturday but did not drop a set as she cruised into the German Open final with a 6-4 7-6(8) victory over world number eight Maria Sakkari of Greece.
Donna Vekic produced another upset to take out sixth seed Maria Sakkari and reach the Berlin Open final on a busy Saturday. Both players took to the court twice on the penultimate day of action in the German capital, after rain on Friday forced the quarter-finals to be pushed forward a day. Ad Sakkari overcame Marketa Vondruosova in the last eight, while Vekic beat lucky loser Elina Avanesyan, both in straight sets.

Maria Sakkari progressed to the Berlin Open semi-finals with a 7-6 6-1 win over Marketa Vondrousova, but was made to sweat after a nervy first set. Sakkari made a fine start after breaking Vondrousova in the first game and then followed that up by holding her serve to move 2-0 ahead. Ad However, any hopes of a comfortable win for the Greek were quickly extinguished in a first set that went right down to the wire.
World No 2 Aryna Sabalenka and fifth seed Coco Gauff both made surprise exits from German Open in Berlin on Thursday.
Elena Rybakina suffered a setback in the build-up to her Wimbledon title defence when she was knocked out of the Berlin WTA event by Donna Vekic on Wednesday. Vekic, ranked 23 in the world, beat the second-seeded Kazakh 6-7 (1/7), 6-3, 6-4 to make it through to the quarter finals. An Australian Open finalist in January, the 24-year-old Rybakina was one of the favourites for the French Open but pulled out early due to illness.
