The clock is ticking as the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises look to finalise their retention shortlist for the forthcoming mega auction. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly yet to convey the number of retentions a franchise can make ahead of the auction. The entire cricketing fraternity awaits BCCI's call on the retention policy, but Chennai Super Kings are arguably more desperate to understand the retention guidelines than any other franchise, as the board's policy could decide whether the legendary MS Dhoni plays another season or not.
Afghanistan could be an inexperienced side, but as they take on New Zealand in the one-off Test at Greater Noida, the 'hosts' start could even be termed favourites. In the sub-continent conditions, there's no denying the favourable conditions that are likely to aid Afghanistan more than the Kiwis. However, Rashid Khan's absence from the squad due to the recent back surgery is a big blow to the Afghans. There isn't much clarity on the participation of Ibrahim Zadran who had hurt his ankle. The visitors, on the other hand, have to pick one between Will Young and Devon Conway for the second opening spot alongside Tom Latham. Michael Bracewell is expected to make his return.
The rising trend of Kiwi cricketers forgoing national contracts to potentially ply their trade in T20 leagues has adversely impacted player availability for New Zealand, skipper Tim Southee admitted on Sunday. The likes former captain Kane Williamson, Devon Conway and Finn Allen this year joined a long list of players who have opted for a casual contract instead of New Zealand Cricket's central contract in order to pursue opportunities within franchise cricket. "NZC is working with the players and they are trying to come up with a solution that's best suited for the players and New Zealand cricket as a whole," Southee said on the eve of New Zealand's one-off Test against Afghanistan.
SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith is excited about the exceptional talent that will feature in Season 3 of South Africa's T20 competition, beginning on January 9, 2025. With the franchises confirming their retained and pre-signed players, Smith highlighted his confidence in the strong squads assembled for the upcoming season and ahead of the player auction in Cape Town on October 1."In the first two seasons, the world-class cricket in front of capacity crowds has positioned Betway SA20 as one of the Tier 1 franchise leagues on the global circuit.
Top-order batters Devon Conway and Finn Allen on Thursday turned down New Zealand central contracts to pursue a career in franchise cricket, announced the country's cricket board. However, Conway will be available for New Zealand's international assignments through a casual agreement similar to the one Kane Williamson signed with NZC recently. It means that Conway will play international matches unless they do not overlap his franchise commitments. “Firstly, I'd like to thank New Zealand Cricket for their support through this process,” Conway said in a video posted by Blackcaps on 'X'.
New Zealand opener Devon Conway has opted for a casual rather than central contract for the upcoming 2024-2025 season, allowing the lefthander the flexibility to play in South Africa's SA20 league next January.
Tim Southee will captain New Zealand's 15-man squad for their trip to face Afghanistan and Sri Lanka next month but may not play in all three tests with head coach Gary Stead keen to manage workloads in tough conditions.
