India's disastrous tour of Australia was reviewed by the BCCI in an over two-hour long meeting with under-fire skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir on Sunday but the Board decided against any knee-jerk response to the debacle that was largely blamed on the poor form of senior players. The meeting was held at a five-star facility in Mumbai and BCCI President Roger Binny and secretary elect Devajit Saikia were in attendance along with Rohit and Gambhir.
The ICC in collaboration with cricket boards of India, Australia and England is exploring the possibility of a two-tier Test system to facilitate more series between big three nations. The Age reported that Jay Shah, the new ICC chairman, is set to meet Cricket Australia chair Mike Baird and his England counterpart Richard Thompson later this month to discuss the finer points. "Any plan for a move to two divisions in Test cricket would kick in after the end of the current Future Tours Program in 2027," the Age reported quoting its sources.
It was a horrible outing for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the recently-concluded Test series against Australia. Despite scoring a brilliant ton in the first Test match, Kohli finished the series with 190 runs at an average of 23.75 across eight innings. The star batter's struggles with deliveries outside the off-stump were once again exposed as his batting technique was criticised by both fans as well as experts. The situation was worse for Rohit who scored just 31 runs in 3 matches before dropping himself for the final Test in Sydney. While speculations are rife about their future, a report by Dainik Jagran claimed that the star batters are unlikely to retire on their own, leaving the tough task up to the selectors.
A.K. Joti, Electoral Officer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has said the final list of candidates for the secretary and treasurer's posts in the by-election will be announced on January 7 at 5 pm. The nomination window for the candidates is slated for January 3 and 4. IANS had previously reported that in a notice issued to state associations on Saturday afternoon, joint secretary Devajit Saikia said the SGM will be held at 12 noon on January 12 at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai to elect a new secretary and treasurer.
I cut my teeth in journalism two decades ago with an unlikely beat called BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India). I call it unlikely because in those days BCCI had just become a full-fledged beat with PILCOM coming into the picture — Jagmohan Dalmiya and IS Bindra beginning to dictate World Cricket. Along the way have seen rise and fall of several presidents and other cricket administrators, including the great Maharaja of Bengal.
Sourav Ganguly as the new Board President on Tuesday. The election of the next set of office-bearers will be a mere formality as all are set to be elected unopposed. However, the members will deliberate if the BCCI should field a candidate for the ICC chair or support incumbent Greg Barclay for a second term. The last date for filing the nominations for the ICC top job is October 20. The ICC Board will meet from November 11-13 in Melbourne.
Trust Assam Cricket Association (ACA) to mess it up every time. Chaos once again reigned supreme at the ACA Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati during the India-South Africa second T20I on Sunday. If a snake slithering onto the field during India's innings was not enough, the worst was in store when the stadium went into partial darkness during South Africa's chase of the massive target of 238, causing a second interruption in the match.
