David Warner brushed off scathing criticism from former teammate Mitchell Johnson over his selection for Australia's Test series against Pakistan, saying on Friday: "Everyone's entitled to their own opinions."
The David Warner vs Mitchell Johnson saga has been going on for a while, with the latter criticising the selection committee over the Australian opener's selection in the Test squad for the Pakistan series. In what would be Warner's final Test assignment, Johnson said that the southpaw doesn't deserve the 'hero's sendoff' that he is getting, leaving many in the cricketing fraternity fuming. Days after Johnson first wrote on the topic in a column, Warner finally broke his silence on the comments made by his former teammate.
Former Australian cricket team skipper Ricky Ponting is ready to step in as 'mediator' to solve the ongoing spat between former teammates David Warner and Mitchell Johnson. The controversy erupted after Johnson wrote in his column that Warner's selection for the Test series against Pakistan was due to the fact that he announced his intention to retire after the series and not because of his form. Since then, both cricketers have taken aim at each other with other colleagues also joining in on the conversation.
MELBOURNE : David Warner has shrugged off Mitchell Johnson's withering criticism of his selection in Australia's test squad as a "headline" for the home summer, saying his former team mate is entitled to his opinion.
Australia Test batter Usman Khawaja has urged the national selectors to look for class over form when they choose his next opening partner after David Warner quits the longest format next month. Warner is set to play his last Test at his home ground in Sydney against Pakistan in the final game of the three-match series starting January 3. Khawaja isn't too concerned about his next partner but urged the selectors to pick the right player who can flourish and succeed at the international level.
Star Australian batter Steve Smith will not be retiring from Test cricket this season, as he is still "talking about things he wants to achieve" despite a lean run in the longest format by his own mighty standards. As per Sydney Morning Herald, Smith's manager Warren Craig has offered clarification that the star batter will not follow David Warner into retirement. Warner will retire from Test cricket following the third Test against Pakistan at his home ground of Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) next year.
Former Australia pacer Mitchell Johnson has found himself embroiled in controversy ever since he decided to pen a critical column on David Warner's inclusion in the national team for the Pakistan Test series. A number of Australian stars have since shared their opinion on the raging topic, while the world of social media has also been buzzing. Some fans also brought back the 2014 Virat Kohli vs Mitchell Johnson feud, highlighting how the India batter was called a 'spoiled brat' by the former pacer.
Star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has reacted to the latest controversy, involving former pacer Mitchell Johnson and opener David Warner, that has gripped Australian cricket in the past few days. In his column for The West Australian, Johnson launched a scathing attack on Warner and chief selector George Bailey. Reacting to his column on Warner, Bailey had said: "I've been sent little snippets of it - I hope he's OK".
