NEW DELHI: The players' auction for this year's Indian Premier League (IPL) was halted after auctioneer Hugh Edmeades collapsed on stage during the bidding in Bengaluru on Saturday (Feb 12).
The Delhi Capitals acquired the ace Australian opener, David Warner, along with his fellow countryman Mitchell Marsh on Day 1 of the IPL 2022 Mega Auction in Bengaluru. The ace opener Warner was bought for Rs. 6.25 crore, while Marsh was acquired for Rs 6.50 crore. Warner, who started his career with the Delhi franchise, became the first buy of the IPL 2022 mega auction for the Capitals. The seasoned campaigner led Sunrisers Hyderabad to their maiden IPL title in 2016. Having scored as many as 5449 runs in 150 matches at an average of 41.59, the southpaw is the fifth-highest run-getter in IPL history. He has 4 tons and 50 half-centuries to his name.
David Warner is delighted to start afresh in the IPL at Delhi Capitals months after a bitter parting with Sunrisers Hyderabad. It was, in fact, a win-win situation for both Warner and the JSW and GMR co-owned franchise. As the 2022 IPL mega auction day progressed, the DC franchise's co-owner Parth Jindal found it increasingly difficult to believe that he has acquired the services of a "legend" at Rs 6.25 crore.
West Indies wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran was picked up by SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) for Rs 10.75 crore in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction. For Pooran, interest was shown by SRH and Kolkata Knight Riders, and in the end, the left-handed batter went to SunRisers. Earlier, Wriddhiman Saha and Sam Billings went unsold in the auction while Ishan Kishan was picked up by Mumbai Indians for Rs 15.25 crore. Dinesh Karthik went to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Jonny Bairstow was acquired by Punjab Kings.
David Warner was picked by Delhi Capitals (DC) for Rs 6.25 crore in the IPL 2022 mega auction in Bengaluru on Saturday. However, former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer, who is known for his humorous posts on social media, has given Warner's price a different twist. Jaffer feels that the franchise got the Aussie opener cheap and compared it to a "Sarojini Nagar market-level bargain".
