Cameron Norrie kept the British flag flying in singles at Wimbledon by defeating Tommy Paul to reach the first grand slam quarter-final of his career.
Left-hander Norrie is the only local hope surviving at the grasscourt major and for a place in Friday's semi-finals he will meet Belgian David Goffin, who earlier edged American 23rd seed Frances Tiafoe 7-6(3), 5-7, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5. Paul, seeded 30th, had defeated a left-handed player in each of his previous three rounds but failed to find solutions to breach Norrie's precise delivery and tame his opponent's accurate forehand in a frenzied atmosphere on Court One.
Goffin, who also made the last eight on his last appearance in 2019, came out on top 7-6 (7/3), 5-7, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 after four hours and 36 minutes on Court Two. The world number 58 fired 18 aces and a total of 59 winners past the 23rd-seeded Tiafoe.
Cameron Norrie made it through to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon for the first time after beating American Tommy Paul in straight sets, 6-4 7-5 6-4. British No.
LONDON : American 23rd seed Frances Tiafoe kept his focus in the face of an Alexander Bublik circus act on Friday to reach the Wimbledon fourth round for the first time.
The 24-year-old punched the air with delight as a Bublik double-fault sealed a 3-6 7-6(1) 7-6(3) 6-4 victory in front an enthralled audience on Court Two. Kazakhstan's Bublik is one of the great entertainers in men's tennis -- a rival to Nick Kyrgios in terms of trick shots but without the scowls and controversy. Bublik held the upper hand when he took the opening set but Tiafoe stuck manfully to his task and won the second on a tiebreak before doing the same in the third.
LONDON :Frenchman Ugo Humbert forgot his rackets but definitely brought his A game to Wimbledon on Wednesday as he recovered strongly from a shaky start to beat French Open runner-up Casper Ruud 3-6 6-2 7-5 6-4 in the second round.
Third seed and French Open runner-up Casper Ruud was knocked out of Wimbledon in the second round on Wednesday, going down in four sets to Ugo Humbert of France.
