Mark Allen enjoyed a perfect start to the new snooker campaign by winning all three matches to top Group 12 at the Championship League in Leicester. The Northern Irishman – who lost last year's final 3-1 to David Gilbert – started his day with a 3-0 win over Himanshu Jain before two 3-1 victories over Jenson Kendrick and Stuart Carrington respectively secured his progress.
David Gilbert made an unbeaten start to the defence of his Championship League title to reach the last 32 at Leicester's Morningside Arena. Gilbert enjoyed two 3-0 wins over Florian Nuessle and Zak Surety respectively before claiming the 2-2 draw he needed against Joe O'Connor – making runs of 78 and 100 – to win Group 16 on seven points, one points clear of Nuessle.
Zhang Anda scored the first 147 of the season as he defeated Anton Kazakov in the European Masters qualifying round. Ukrainian competitor Kazakov took the lead in the game as he notched the first frame of their match-up 69-30, but Zhang reeled off five frames on the bounce to sweep to victory. Ad/> Anda not only grabbed a 147 in the second frame, but he finished on 151 after a foul gave him some extra points for what is likely to be the highest total score in a frame for the rest of the season, too.
Ronnie O'Sullivan and his fierce Essex rival Ali Carter will clash at the Championship League after world No. 20 Carter clinched his last-32 spot in style on Thursday. The duo – who have contested some memorable duals at the World Championship – will face each other in Group A on Wednesday 27 July in a section that also contains Yuan Sijun and Pang Junxu.
Ronnie O'Sullivan is set to make his return to action at the Championship League in Leicester on Monday.
