Star New Zealand batter Kane Williamson and his wife have been blessed with a baby girl, announced the former Kiwi skipper on Tuesday. Williamson took to Instagram to share the news with everyone. "And then there was 3 Welcome to the world beautiful Girl. So grateful for your safe arrival and the exciting journey ahead," said the caption of Kane's post. Kane missed the recently-concluded T20I series against Australia this month as he was on a paternity leave. Australia won the series 3-0. However, he will be playing the Test series starting from February 29. The star batter last appeared in the Kiwis' two-Test series against South Africa earlier in February. Kiwis won the series 2-0 and Kane was the star, scoring 403 runs in four innings, including three centuries.
A "clinical" Australia beat New Zealand by 27 runs in the rain-shortened third Twenty20 in Auckland on Sunday to complete a clean sweep of the series. Responding to Australia's 118-4 from 10.4 overs, New Zealand scored 98-3, falling short of a target adjusted to 126 off 10 overs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method. The required run rate grew quickly after the home side lost two quick wickets before Glenn Phillips posted their top score for the second straight game, finishing on 40 not out off 24 balls. Australian pace bowler Spencer Johnson impressed in his first appearance of the series taking 1-10 off his two overs.
Pace bowler Scott Kuggeleijn was recalled on Sunday to replace Kyle Jamieson in New Zealand's squad for the two-Test home series against Australia. Kuggeleijn, whose lone appearance came in a loss to England in Mount Maunganui last year, is the only addition to the 14-man squad that swept under-strength South Africa 2-0 this month. He replaces fellow-seamer Jamieson, who faces a long stint out of cricket after suffering a back stress fracture during the Proteas series.
New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell is expected to recover from a foot injury in time for the test matches against Australia later this month while Scott Kuggeleijn will replace injured fast bowler Kyle Jamieson, New Zealand Cricket said on Saturday.
New Zealand strike bowler Trent Boult was recalled on Wednesday for the T20I series against Australia but the hosts will be without Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell. Boult is in a 14-man squad for the three-match series but only available for the last two games in Auckland, with fellow veteran seamer Tim Southee to play just the opening game, in Wellington on February 21. The 34-year-old Boult has been infrequently selected for international duty since being released from his New Zealand central contract in August 2022, allowing him to play in more domestic T20 leagues.
Trent Boult was named in the New Zealand squad for part of the upcoming Twenty20 series against Australia on Wednesday, indicating that the veteran fast bowler is still in the frame for the World Cup in June.
New Zealand vs South Africa 2nd Test Day 1 Live: New Zealand take on South Africa in the second and final Test match of the series at Seddon Park, Hamilton. The Kiwis, who lead 1-0, will aim to seal the series while the Proteas will eye to square it. New Zealand registered a 281-run win victory over South Africa in the first Test at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui. New Zealand are a step closer to a maiden series win over South Africa after 17 previous failed attempts, dating back to 1931. Given their struggles at Bay Oval, the vastly inexperienced Proteas will need a dramatic turnaround to win the second and final Test, starting on Tuesday. (Live Scorecard)
