PARIS : Highlights of the first day at the French Open on Sunday (times GMT):
Jessica Pegula advanced to the second round of the French Open after breezing past American compatriot Danielle Collins 6-4 6-2. Pegula kept herself in the ascendancy for the majority of a keenly fought encounter and did what was required to progress and book a second-round tie with Camila Giorgi. Ad Pegula spoke afterwards and — given her and Collins were last on court on Sunday — revealed the pre-match preparations that kept her fresh during the day.
Jessica Pegula saw off Magda Linette in straight sets to cruise into the Miami Open quarter-finals, while Martina Trevisan celebrated reaching the last eight of a WTA 1000 event for the first time in her career after defeating Jelena Ostapenko. Third seed Pegula has hit a strong streak of form on home soil, her victory over Linette coming hot on the heels of straight-sets wins against Katherin Sebov and Danielle Collins as the American bids to win her first title of the season.
Jessica Pegula eased into the third round of the Miami Open with a 6-3 6-1 victory over Katherine Sebov. World No. 3 Pegula broke serve five times to beat qualifier Sebov, who was on an eight-match winning streak.
Seventh-seeded Mayar Sherif of Egypt saved two match points while rallying for a 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4 win over China's Xinyu Wang on Thursday in the second round of the Abierto GNP Seguros in Monterrey, Mexico.
