Colombian Egan Bernal will make his return on the Tour de France after a two-year hiatus, his Ineos Grenadiers team said on Monday.
INEOS Grenadiers have confirmed that 2019 Tour De France winner Egan Bernal is back in their squad for his first Grand Tour since his horrific injury in 2022. Bernal hasn’t raced at a Grand Tour since the 2021 Vuelta a Espana but after recovering from his serious injuries he is part of an interesting INEOS line-up. Ad Rising British and Spanish stars Tom Pidcock and Carlos Rodriguez are the nominal General Classification contenders although neither are expected to seriously fight for yellow this early in their careers.
Geraint Thomas has revealed his Ineos Grenadiers team didn’t share the same level of “belief” that he had before this year’s Tour de France. The 36-year-old won the Tour de Suisse in the build-up to the Tour in June and entered the race without being cited as team leader, with compatriot Adam Yates and Dani Martinez getting the nod. Ad/> With three stages remaining, Thomas is over 12 minutes ahead of Yates in the general classification, with Martinez down in 29th.
Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) emulated his compatriot Bjarne Riis in 1996 with a remarkable solo victory at Hautacam in the Pyrenees to strengthen his vice-like grip on the yellow jersey in Stage 18 of the Tour de France. The 25-year-old cracked Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) with the help of Belgian teammate Wout van Aert after the indefatigable green jersey’s latest display of dominance in a breakaway that almost went the distance in the enthralling 143.2km ride through the Pyrenees.
It’s not as if Ineos Grenadiers didn’t try. Tom Pidcock was sniffing around the early moves during the fast and frantic start to Stage 17 while Dylan van Baarle, second time lucky, got himself into the breakaway alongside Dani Martinez. Jonathan Castroviejo even tried to bridge over on the first of four climbs, the Col d’Aspin, giving Geraint Thomas three men up the road.
Ineos Grenadiers may have the numerical advantage at the Tour de France but it matters for little without the power, claims 12-time stage winner Robbie McEwen. Ineos were primed for an assault on the yellow jersey in the final week with a full quota of eight riders still in the race, while Jumbo-Visma and UAE Team Emirates have thinner support casts to guide Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar through the yellow jersey battle.
Michael Matthews (BikeExchange–Jayco) produced a stunning ride to claim victory on Stage 14 of the Tour de France. After attacking with 52km to go, the Australian hit the front but was reeled in momentarily by Alberto Bettiol (EF Education–EasyPost) on the final climb.
The 2022 Tour de France sees Slovenian prodigy Tadej Pogacar aim to win a third yellow jersey in three years, but the favourite is up against some stiff opposition.
