MANCHESTER, England : Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva won the toss and opted to bat in the first test of a three-match series against England on Wednesday under cloudy skies at Old Trafford.
England head into the first Test against Sri Lanka at Old Trafford starting Wednesday with several players given a chance to prove a point after captain Ben Stokes's series-ending injury. Star all-rounder Stokes is set to play no part at all in the three-match contest after tearing his hamstring during the Hundred. And that means England will be without their inspirational leader for the first time since Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum launched the team's dynamic 'Bazball' era two years ago.
England Test captain Ben Stokes was carried off the field on Sunday while playing for Hundred outfit Northern Superchargers. All-rounder Stokes, 33, suffered an apparent hamstring injury in their match in Manchester and was accompanied into the stands by two Superchargers staff members. He grabbed the back of his left leg while in pain on the floor having hit a quick single. England begin the first of their three-match Test series with Sri Lanka on August 21, at the same Old Trafford ground.
England named a 14-member squad for their upcoming three-match Test series against Sri Lanka. Designated opener Zak Crawley will miss the series after he sustained a fracture on his right little finger in England's third Test against the West Indies. Along with this seamer Dillon Pennington will also miss out on the series after sustaining a hamstring injury while playing for the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred competition.
England will be without opening batter Zak Crawley for their three-match test series against Sri Lanka after he fractured his right little finger, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said on Sunday as they announced their 14-member squad.
Fast bowler Mark Wood will take James Anderson's spot in the England squad for next week's second test against West Indies at Trent Bridge, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said on Saturday.
Tearaway pacer Mark Wood has been added to England's squad for the second Test against West Indies, starting at Trent Bridge on Thursday. Wood comes in after veteran pacer James Anderson retired from international cricket following England's crushing win over West Indies by an innings and 114 runs at Lord's. Wood's last Test appearance came against India at Dharamshala in March and didn't play the first Test at Lord's due to him recently featuring for England in the 2024 Men's T20 World Cup in the West Indies last month. England are having a 1-0 lead in the ongoing three-match Test series against the West Indies.
LONDON : England have recalled Chris Woakes and drafted in the uncapped duo of Nottinghamshire seamer Dillon Pennington and Surrey batter Jamie Smith for the first two home tests against West Indies next month.
