New Zealand's Scott McLaughlin roared to the first IndyCar victory of his career on Sunday to win the season-opening Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in Florida.
McLaughlin led from pole position, as team-mate Power slipped back to fourth on an alternate tyre strategy, and held off reigning champion Alex Palou by half a second to take his maiden IndyCar win.
Andretti Autosport’s Romain Grosjean was the first driver to duck below the 60sec mark in the final segment of qualifying, as all six drivers took to the track on reds.
The American’s Andretti Global operation has applied to enter F1, and needs to get a green light soon if it is going to have enough time to get things up and running.
Colton Herta is a pleasure to interview, primarily because he can’t help telling the truth. While he’s not going to lay his soul bare and may not reveal everything he’s thinking, if he provides an answer then he means it. For instance, last month during the IndyCar media days, he inevitably had to field questions about Formula 1, having been part of Michael Andretti’s ultimately foiled plan to take control of the Alfa Romeo Sauber team.
